“I am honored to serve on the Senate Commerce Committee that oversees a range of issues important to New Mexico and that have a direct impact on our economy, including infrastructure development, technology, and transportation,” Heinrich said in a statement.
Heinrich will be temporarily replacing the late Senator Frank Lautenberg until the special election on October 6.
Lautenberg passed away on June 3 of viral pneumonia.
Lautenberg was replaced by Republican New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa by Gov. Chris Christie. Chiesa will not run to replace Lautenberg.
Heinrich also sits on the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Select Committee on Intelligence, and Joint Economic Committee.
