New ad criticizes Martinez over leaked audio

Better New Mexico PAC Que Verguenza adA TV ad criticizing Gov. Susana Martinez was announced today, though it isn’t from one of the Democrats hoping to unseat her.

The ad is from the Better New Mexico PAC which is associated with ProgressNow New Mexico, a group that has been heavily critical of Martinez during her time in office. ProgressNow New Mexico produced the ad.

The transcript and video of the ad is available at the bottom of the post.

The ad features a Hispanic woman talking about the audio released by Mother Jones in an article about Martinez. The audio came from a debate prep session in 2010.

“Behind closed doors, Susana Martinez played along when her staff laughed and shamed Spanish speaking families, like mine,” the woman says. “Caught on tape, she refuses to apologize.”

The ad refers to audio where then-deputy campaign secretary Matt Kennicott says of then-Speaker of the House Ben Lujan, “Somebody told me he’s absolutely eloquent in Spanish, but his English? He sounds like a retard.”

Lujan spoke Spanish as his first language. Kennicott is now the spokesman for the state Human Services Department.

Martinez said she did not apologize for the comments in the story, although the comments about Lujan were not made by her.

Kennicott did apologize.

According to Steve Terrell, who posted about the ad:

Martinez’s campaign spokesman told my colleague Milan Simonich, “This is a false ad run by an extreme, dark-money group that has a history of peddling fictional and misleading attacks against Gov. Martinez,”

The ad will air throughout the week, according to the PAC.

The woman in the ad is Oriana Sandoval, a former Executive Director of New Mexico Vote Matters.

Martinez herself has aired two ads, while Lawrence Rael will begin airing his first ad tomorrow. This is the first negative ad of the campaign in New Mexico.

A radio ad by Alan Webber also criticized Martinez over the audio released by Mother Jones.

Here is the transcript of the ad:

Oriana Sandoval: We all want to be proud of our leaders, but Susana Martinez is not the leader we thought she was. Turns out, she’s just another politician.

Behind closed doors, Susana Martinez played along when her staff laughed and shamed Spanish speaking families, like mine.

Caught on tape, she refuses to apologize. Que Verguenza!

Susana Martinez is not right for New Mexico. She’s not right for me, she’s not right for you.

  1. Katherine West says:

She is not right for New Mexico or any other state that cares about their children.

  2. Michelle says:

One of her recent campaign ads includes her taking credit for a federal program that has been around for years that provides summer lunches in poverty areas for kids, and democrat endorsements that on reflection I think were a part of her first run for governor — I can’t believe these folks would stand behind her now…. although there’s a couple where the person says she came out after a disaster and helped… well, duh, of course she did. That’s what she had to do or else the bad press would have been totally ruinous. Sigh.
