The portion of the audio that the Rael uses involves then-deputy campaign manager Matt Kennicott and Gov. Susana Martinez.
In the brief audio clip, Kennicott says of then-Speaker of the House Ben Lujan, “Somebody told me he’s absolutely eloquent in Spanish, but his English? He sounds like a retard.”
Martinez responds, “Oh.”
The full transcript of the English version of the ad is available at the bottom of the post, along with the ads themselves.
Kennicott later apologized for the remarks.
The audio came from the liberal magazine Mother Jones which had the audio as part of a cover story on Martinez.
“I have always believed that one of New Mexico’s core strengths is its diversity,” Lawrence Rael said in a release announcing the ad. “New Mexicans are learning that, behind closed doors, Governor Martinez and her key aides have no respect for the many people that make up our state.”
The ad is targeting northern New Mexico — or the area that Rael’s campaign says knew Lujan best. The ad will run in Santa Fe, Espanola, Taos and Las Vegas areas, all heavily Hispanic and heavily Democratic areas of the state.
The radio ads are the second to target Susana Martinez over the audio clips. The first came from the Alan Webber campaign.
Like the Webber ad, these seem more targeted at the general election than the primary. The ad only mentions Rael at the end and doesn’t mention any of his Democratic opponents — instead it goes after Martinez, the incumbent governor who is running unopposed in the Republican primary.
Martinez has aired two ads already, both positive spots. Rael is the only Democrat so far to air a TV ad, also a positive spot that doesn’t mention any of his opponents — either in the Democratic primary or Martinez, who he would face if he wins the primary on June 3.
Here are the two versions of the ad, the English version first followed by the Spanish version.
Transcript of the ad as provided by the Rael campaign.
Announcer:Here is Governor Martinez and her key aides discussing the late Speaker Lujan:
Audio of Matt Kennicott: “Somebody told me he’s absolutely eloquent in Spanish, but his English? He sounds like a retard.”
Audio of Susana Martinez: “Oh.”
Announcer: Governor Martinez didn’t fire her aide and refuses to apologize. New Mexicans deserve better. Lawrence Rael knows that our diversity gives us strength and he will restore trust in our government as our next Governor.
